Teaching
Modul-Leiter: Markus Pauly, Matias Zurbriggen
Modul Leiter: Georg Groth, Ute Armbruster, Markus Pauly, Stefanie Höller
The lecture gives an introduction to the structure and function of cells as well as the foundation of molecular biology and genetics. In addition, there is an experimental course associated with the module, which entails theoretical and experimental cloning techniques
Module leader: Ilka Axmann, Markus Pauly, Matias Zurbriggen
The course gives an introduction to carbohydrate structures, their synthesis and degradation, and their function in bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals including diseases.
The expereimental part includes the analysis of an unknown carbohydrate using various analytical methods such as HPLC, Mass spectrometry etc.
Module leader: Markus Pauly
Students will be introduced on basic concepts and methods of modern biotechnology such as in silico sequence analysis, molecular cloning, bacterial and yeast transformation and genome editing. The knowledge will then be applied experimentally to edit the genome of a yeast using CRISPR technology and to analyze the genotype and phenotype of the resulting mutants.
Module leader: Vicente Ramirez
The lecture series explores the fundamentals of this topic based on various bookchapters of Clark et al., “Biotechnology: the technological applications of genomics and genetics”. In addition, institutes associated with this master major will highlight their exciting research.
Module leaders: Matias Zurbriggen, Markus Pauly
The lecture series gives insights into molecular mechanisms in plant growth and development based on various bookchapters of Taiz et al., “Plant physiology and development”. In addition, institutes associated with this master major will highlight their exciting research.
Module leaders: Markus Pauly, Nicole Linka
In this 1-day workshop students will be made aware of how to conduct proper scientific experiments, what are the consequences of scientific misconduct. In addition, e-labboks and scientific data management (ARCs) are introduced.
Module leader: Markus Pauly
Students will be introduced to various cloning and CRISPR-Cas strategies, transformation protocols and geno-, pheno-, and chemotyping organisms. In addition, biotechnological protein expression, purification, and functional test will be carried out.
Module leader: Vicente Ramirez
Experimental work includes DNA isolation and genotyping strategies, RNA transcript analysis and various techniques for the analysis of biomass.
Module leader: Vicente Ramirez
This Master Module explores the theoretical and practical foundations of synthetic biology. It equips students with the skills to apply state-of-the-art technologies in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems, such as advanced cloning methods, CRISPR-based genome editing, and synthetic molecular switches. The course prepares students to utilize these tools in fundamental research as well as in applied biotechnology contexts.
Module leader: Matias Zurbriggen, Vicente Ramirez
For this course students will have prepared 2 seminars based on provided journal articles. During the 2-day course students will then present one of their seminars followed by a group discussion.
